I don’t know how I missed the call.

Actually, that’s not totally true. I know exactly how I missed the call. I chose not to answer. I heard the phone, Madonna was singing to me like she always does when someone is calling… ‘Ring ring ring goes the telephone…’ Yeah, Madge.. Thanks. I know. But not only was it late for a caller, I was watching one of the most important movies of a prior generation. You see, I had been reading Jonno (like I always have) and he linked off to fourfour where there was the most amazing review(?) of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. I had to have it and ordered it right away… Today was the day it arrived! I had thought it came yesterday, but that was just Famous Author Rob Byrnes’ enormous package. Not that that in itself wasn’t exciting, because it so was… more on that later.

Anyhoo. Where was I? Oh yeah. So I missed the call that came in at 10:31 on my SLVR phone… When the brilliantly awful movie was over I checked the call list. It was my BFF Patrick from up north! No he’s not from Canada, realize I am practically in Mexico down here… He’s from the Bay Area!  Apparently, as I found out as I listened to the voicemail, a friend from my past, our past, had hijacked Patrick’s phone to make the call. I don’t want to name names… let’s call him Fabio. So Fabio is like a very close friend from when I was in those difficult early 20’s. I had just moved away from my home town and he was one of the first people I had met in a totally new social circle. (I am sure I blogged this before somewhere…) So we hung out like everyday and were the cutest people everywhere we went. We loved the attention. It was a fun time. Only I fell madly in love. He did not. So I harbored this mad crush for a very long time. It hurt everyday. I’d listen to that Lisa Loeb song that was ironically popular at the time over and over and over. It seemed to describe our situation at the time. They funny part was that he thought so too.

  1. Oh, wow, Daniel.  I’d say make the call, chat a little, catch up, and say your goodbyes.  You’re such a different person now (I’m taking your word for it, I obviously didn’t know you then), and to let him take you back would only cause harm.
I’d bet that you’ll find he’s no longer who you remember him as, either.
But you have to make the call, or you’ll waste so much time in the future wondering about it.
    *hugs*

  2. Years pass us by and yet those raw little pockets of our past blister so easily when we place a magnifying glass on them. But the place is infinitely smaller and the pain and hurt is only a twinge now, nothing to even bother with. The ache has been replaced by obligations and new experiences. Still that face and the sound of that voice makes your eyes water just a little.
